Breast Cancer Awareness or Just Pink Washing?

I wanted to provide a summary of the things I highlighted this week for breast cancer awareness.

If you want to support breast cancer by purchasing a multitude of “pink” products, I highlighted a few products that I liked.

If you want to support the effort to find a cure for breast cancer – look at these breast cancer research organizations.

If you want to support organizations that help breast cancer patients in the here and now – look at this post on breast cancer support organizations.

I urge you to vet any organization that you choose to support. One of the things that bugged me about the information that I found this week was the astounding lack of information about the real support going to breast cancer organizations (which organizations? And how much $$$?). How much did the NFL really donate anyway? Of their own money? Not money they generated in an auction.

Does the NFL really care about making a difference in breast cancer awareness or do they just love boobies? You decide. I’m hoping I can really figure out how much they have actually supported breast cancer awareness this month – of their own money.

I really did see pink everywhere and I am sure that the pinkness will be present throughout the entire month of October. All this pinkness makes me worried about the pink washing of breast cancer.

Is the fact that cat food, and I am not kidding — my Purina cat chow that I bought at Target– had a pink ribbon printed on the bag and a reference to breast cancer support for the Susan G. Komen for a Cure overly broad and dilutive for the breast cancer awareness?

Or is the fact that every kind of product is jumping on the pink bandwagon a good thing for awareness? I suppose the real test is the early prevention #s – are more people getting tested and catching breast cancer BEFORE it enters into an untreatable stage or an “unlikely to survive for very long” stage?

For those who have/had breast cancer and have survived or for those who want to make a tribute to a family member with breast cancer, there is a special bundle called ThinkPink available from Creative Memories. You can see the one on my consultant site if you are interested. (NO pressure, just putting it out there in case someone wants to do something constructive with all of this pink merchandise!)

I hope the information on breast cancer organizations and breast cancer awareness this week has been helpful!

PS – the pictures of the football players are from my children’s football teams this past weekend – so it isn’t only the NFL that’s getting in on the pink action, it’s Pop Warner Football too!
