Day 3 of 90 Women in 90 Days
Today’s featured woman is Gill Curry. I first met Gilly at my sister-in-law’s wedding when I was in law school (and that was a while ago). We’ve stayed in touch all these years, visiting across the pond, and the last time I saw her in person was two years ago when she was doing a round the world trip. If that sort of moxie doesn’t show a sense of fortitude and adventure, I don’t know what else does! Gilly was a middle school photography teacher before she retired. She used to tell us crazy stories about these middle school-aged boys she was teaching. Little did I know that those stories would come back to me in spades when I had three boys of my own.
Gilly has been a great resource and tourist center for our family when both my brother and I had the opportunity to stay with her in England at different times; I was attending Oxford one summer for law school and my brother was attending the University of London a different summer. We made Gilly’s house a base camp and then traveled throughout London on most weekends and then all over the United Kingdom after our school time was up. You know when you love/like someone’s parents that you know, you have a good friend and human being! That was more than true for Gilly and her parents!
One of the things I most admire Gilly for is her focus on Africa and making lives better for girls in Sierra Leone. Gilly has been instrumental in raising money for these girls in Sierra Leone over the years as a Soroptimist. You may remember that a couple of years ago I was collecting bras and undergarments to send to Africa – that was for Gilly’s organization. She has done so much work for this group and organization that they named the school in Sierra Leone after her. I find that to be so cool. How amazing do you have to be to have made such an impact on a group of people that they name a school after you. She is currently raising money to build a school library and bathrooms. Yes, seriously, real bathrooms, for this school. Gilly is ALL that!
If you care to donate the Kori Women’s Development Project to help her school in Sierra Leone, please donate to our DesBrisay Sigler Family Foundation (EIN 94-3347046) and I will forward the money to Gilly and her organization (just notate your wish in the memo field). You can also send a note to bongai@gotmail.co.uk
Who, in your life, “is ALL that?”
