Differentiation is all the rage in the District and is the topic of discussion among the staff and parents in the District this year. I believe differentiated curriculum is essential in every classroom and you really get to see it in action in a multi-age classroom. (Ward, K. (2002). Multiage Education, Why We Need It Now More Than Ever. Note as of August 15, 2011, this report is no longer available online.) Curriculum activities are targeted to the developmental needs of a wide range of ages and students progress along a continuum of simple to more complex material at their own pace. Differentiation works well to meet the needs of children on both ends of the academic spectrum. As a School Board Member, I would encourage collaboration among the schools in the differentiated curriculum discussion in the District.
