Midnight in Paris – a Fun Summer Movie

Midnight in Paris in Antique Shop

Last night we went to the movies to see Midnight in Paris while the kids saw Cars 2. Midnight in Paris is the most recent Woody Allen film. The movie involves a couple who is engaged and they are visiting her parents who are on business in Paris. The basic plot line is that Owen Wilson (Gil Penderer) wants to live in a different, and what he thinks is better, era in Paris when it was grand and meaningful, not empty and crass like his life as a bored script writer in Hollywood. His fiance is Inez, a spoiled brat of a girl (played by Rachel McAdams) who is hard to watch.

Gil spends the bulk of his time walking the streets of Paris for writing inspiration, accidentially ending up in the 20’s (which is what he considers the Golden Age) with the likes of Hemingway, Cole Porter, Gertrude Stein (played by the fantastic Kathy Bates), Dali, Picasso, and many others, and in the end, he starts falling for flapper, Adriana (Marion Cotilliard).

I loved this movie – yes, it’s a bit predictable and campy, but I absolutely love the 1920’s and the 1890’s. My favorite scene was when Gil and Adriana were watching the Can-Can in the 1890’s – the dance, the music, the costumes, their faces while watching the dance – all entertaining! Dali (Adrien Brody) absolutely steels the show in his scenes. It was a fun plot line, especially for me because those are my two favorites eras, next to the 1850s Civil War era.

This movie would be better in the theater for the costumes and ambiance but will be perfectly good on Netflix or DVD. Enjoy! Leave a comment and let me know what your favorite summer movie is (besides Harry Potter:)
