President Theodore Roosevelt put more U.S. territory under federally protected conservation status than any other President. Which of the following things did he not do during his years in the White House?
Establish the Grand Canyon as a national park
Establish the U.S. Forest Service
Establish the first national monuments
Establish the first national game preserves
Establish the first federal bird reservations, a.k.a. bird sanctuaries |
The answer is that he did not establish the Grand Canyon as a National Park while he was President, it happened later. Evenso, he did an amazing job in protecting land, animals, and nature – and in general starting a Federal conservation effort that continues until today.
We have really enjoyed visiting and exploring the National Parks but some of the most interesting sites are actually National Monuments (which only require Presidential support whereas becoming a National park requires an Act of Congress, which is a much more difficult and time consuming process).
For a longer (more detailed) quiz on the National Parks – see this Budget Travel site. It’s fun to figure out what you know about the Parks and other conservation efforts.
