What Can You Do to Save a Life?

Today is National Organ Donor Day. I know, some people think today is only a celebration of St. Valentine. But that’s really just a “Hallmark” holiday about love that should actually be celebrated on a daily basis. National Organ Donor Day is about raising the awareness and highlighting the importance of becoming an organ donor. It’s about love of life, love for humanity. It’s about as real as it gets! As an organ donor, you can save a life, give someone a new lease on life, give the gift of sight, and many other possibilities. Please consider becoming an organ donor.

I wrote another post about becoming an organ donor when our former school director, Chris Mahoney, needed a liver transplant. But today I am writing about an immediate gift of life through a friend’s death.

I had a sharp reminder of how fragile life is recently when a friend’s husband, who was in his early 50’s, died suddenly of a massive heart attack. Because he was an organ donor, he was able to give many others life and better health. Please read the direct plea to become an organ donor from his wife, Sunny:

“Brian K– had a knack for improving the lives of everyone that crossed his path. So, it’s no surprise that even with his passing he continued on his mission.

Because he chose to be an organ donor, 2 women who were blind, were given the gift of sight. Two young parents, who were slaves to a dialysis machine were given the freedom to lead normal lives. Another man, who would [have] otherwise not survived, was given a new liver and a second chance in life. Countless others have had the quality of their lives improved through his tissue, bone, etc. donation.

I gotta be honest, with everything else going on, the donation process added one more huge stress to the family, but we all know that the right decision is rarely the easy one. Please make sure you are signed up to be an organ donor.”

I couldn’t have said it better. Please consider registering as an organ donor. You could save a life!
