Day 2 of 90 Women in 90 Days
Today’s featured woman is Emily Wanderer Cohen. I first met Emily when I was a freshman at UC Berkeley and joined the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. We’ve stayed in touch over the years and recently reconnected over wine tasting and swapping stories about men, dating, and divorce. One of the things I love about Emily is her persistence and her willingness to write a book on a very difficult subject despite the deep personal pain and hurt it has unearthed. Apparently, we all must move through the difficult stuff to move forward. Not only is Emily doing that personally, but she is now helping others do the same thing.
Emily has written an international best-selling book called From Generation to Generation, Healing Intergenerational Trauma Through Storytelling. I was so fascinated by her book that I sat down and read it from cover to cover in one afternoon. She is blazing a new trail of healing in the previously ‘verboten’ area of trauma among second and third-generation Holocaust survivors. In her own words, “the prevailing thought has been that we (2Gs and 3Gs) have nothing to complain about, because our parents went through so much worse, but their trauma has been transmitted to us and we are doomed to repeat that transmission unless we intentionally stop the cycle.”
Emily is now helping others through the process of healing their own intergenerational trauma. After talking to Emily in more detail about her work, it truly amazes me that many people don’t even know that they are suffering from intergenerational trauma. They just know something’s missing, even though they are successful, but they don’t know what that something is. Emily speaks on the topic and does personal coaching in this area. She is seeking speaking opportunities on this intergenerational trauma topic and client referrals.
