Today is Oski’s birthday. He was born on September 27, 1941, making him 70 today. Oski made his costumed debut in a size 54 sweater, with blue trousers, white gloves, and size 13 ½ football shoes at the Cal – St. Mary’s game. This debut ended the use of live bears at Cal football games. Cal lost that game 31-0 — Let’s hope we don’t see a repeat of that score this football season! He was the creation of William C. Rockwell ’48 and Warrington Colescott, an art editor at the Daily Cal who drew Oskie cartoons for publication on Fridays and Mondays to make the Cal fans feel better about the lousy football team – sounds like we could use that now. They named the costumed mascot after the Oski Wow Wow yell and thus Oski, was born.
