New Year’s Resolutions and More

Sonya Sigler CrownLast year I picked a theme to concentrate on for the year based upon three words: love, boundaries, and peace. This year I thought I would do something similar but more in depth.

For the last 6-8 weeks, I really took a look at what was going on in my life and what I could do about it, if anything. I came across Goop’s blog for December called Perfect. I wrote briefly about it yesterday as being one of the most influential articles I read in 2012. It was. It was helpful to see how destructive perfection can be and how detrimental to your psyche being a perfectionist can be. So, I’m ready to give it up.

One of the other things that helped spur this on was my friend Shannon’s note about  the winter solstice and being able to create your own transformation. In her words:

Happy Winter Solstice Dear Ones. It’s the longest night of the year. And this year has been foretold by many to be a Solstice of great change and transformation. What does it all mean? I say: Create the transformation YOU WANT in your life, on your Earth, in your heart, with your loved ones. The time is now.

I took her message to heart and on my commute throughout the rest of December thought about this and what I wanted to accomplish and achieve in 2013. This is the list I came up with:

Themes:
Trust, Let Go of Control & Fear; Just Be, Present
Progress, Not Perfection
Decisions Guided by Love, not Fear
Resolutions/Behavior:
Writing – 15 Minutes
Thinking – 15 minutes (meditating or sitting still)
Walk 10,000 steps a day

I didn’t do the usual “lose 20 pounds” or “be a better person.” I set out what I thought I could actually do, even if they are hard for me, personally, to do. I figured I could actually just set a timer for 15 minutes each day and just write. I have a good system in Evernote to track ideas and what I want to write about so I can just pick one of those and go to town! I thought I could do the same thing for the 15 minutes of thinking time. I think we’ve lost the ability to just sit and think about things, at least I know I have. Does it count if I sit and knit for 15 minutes and think about a particular issue or is this just more multi-tasking? We’ll see. Finally, I had a good conversation with my boss about the writing and thinking time. We agreed they were both good things today personally and professionally.

Here’s to an AWESOME 2013!
